Ensure all gas control valves are initially in the OFF position. Turn on the pilot control valve and ignite the pilot while pressing the safety control valve for about 30 seconds. If the flame goes out, repeat the procedure.
Open all windows and doors to allow gas to disperse, extinguish any naked flames, and shut off the main gas meter control valve. Do not operate electrical switches or phones indoors, and call your local emergency gas hotline immediately.
